Frequently Asked Questions, Process & Pricing
Before answering any of the most common questions asked of copywriters, I think it would be helpful to tell you my general methodology.
- The initial discovery phone call with the client.
- I gather as much information about the product or service and the industry as possible.
- I study the information, make many pages of notes and organize them on my computer for reference.
- I do in-depth research on the prospects for the product, writing directly to your avatar.
- I determine the primary focus of the promotion, together with the input I received from the client. During this stage, I will create many different headlines to get at the main benefit of the product. A few of these headlines will be delivered to the client for approval.
- Once I have approval, I write the copy. I will write many drafts and revisions before emailing it to the client.
- The client reviews the copy and gives their input. The best method of reviewing copy that I’ve found, is to make comments directly on the file, using Microsoft Word’s “Track Changes” feature. This will make it easier for you to comment at length right on the document.
- I will make revisions as requested by the client and send the finished copy via email (unless the client prefers it to be sent in another format). Please understand that the responsibility for proof-reading the copy before putting it into production is yours.
- I appreciate it when the client keeps me posted on the results. This way, if I’m getting a royalty on the roll-out, I will often suggest test ideas or improvements to the client at no cost, so as to maximize response (and of course maintain our copy as the control).
Now for the Frequently Asked Questions:
What is copywriting?
Copywriting is the process of creating written content, such as ads, emails, social media posts, and website copy, with the goal of persuading the reader to take a specific action.
What are your qualifications as a copywriter?
As a freelance writer, I have written magazine articles, program notes, website content, facebook ads, brochures, concert programs and a number of other projects for Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) clients.
What is the difference between a Direct-Response Copywriter and a Content Marketer?
A Direct-Response Copywriter does the research necessary to really know their target audience. It is a way to build trust and credibility. The goal is to motivate those readers to take a specific action. We communicate through a deep understanding of their needs, their wants, and their pain points. In this way we can personalize the content to resonate directly with our readers.
Content writing also requires a lot of research but it is focused on providing information and educating the reader. Content writing can include blog posts, articles, and other forms of informative copy.
What is NeuroArts?
NeuroArts is the scientific study of how we react to the arts and aesthetics and how it impacts mental and physical health. Optimal health can only be achieved when there is equilibrium between mind, body, and soul. We can use the arts to help put ourselves into a state of self-healing with less stress and overall better health.
Do you do the work yourself, or do you out-source any of the projects?
To keep the quality consistent, I do all the writing myself. If you also need a designer, I will have another team member handle that work.
If I have a tight deadline, will you be able to meet my time restraints?
Please call for the answer to this question. It will depend on the deadlines I have on my current projects and the amount of time your project will need.
What are your fees?
Because each assignment is customized to your specific needs, it’s difficult to quote a price without a consultation. Based on the information we discuss, I would be happy to give you a quote for that particular project. In the meantime, the enclosed Schedule of Estimated Fees will give you a typical price range for a variety of different projects.
Can you explain what a Website Content Audit is?
Did you ever spend a lot of money designing your website only to be baffled by the fact that it doesn’t seem to be generating any business? In assessing your site I will:
- Review your current content using the industry’s best practices
- Prepare a strategic review
- Consider how your website compares to your competitors
- Present you with an extensive report containing actionable items that will help generate more business
As of March 2023, there are over 2.7 BILLION websites competing for our attention. It is crucial for your company to have a website that performs well. Site Auditors specialize in making your website content stand out from the rest.
And, my favorite question... Why should I hire a copywriter instead of just using AI?
For the answer to this, I went directly to ChatGPT. Here is the result:
While AI has come a long way in terms of natural language processing and generation, there are several reasons why using a copywriter can be beneficial over AI:
- Understanding of audience and brand voice: A good copywriter has a deep understanding of the target audience and the brand voice, which enables them to create content that resonates with the readers and accurately reflects the brand’s values and messaging. AI, on the other hand, may not have the same level of understanding and may produce generic content that lacks personality and relevance.
- Creativity and originality: Copywriting involves not just writing compelling content, but also coming up with fresh and creative ideas that stand out in a crowded market. AI may be able to generate text based on existing data and patterns, but it cannot create original ideas or think outside the box in the same way a human can.
- Adaptability: A copywriter can adapt their writing style and approach based on the feedback received from the client or the performance of the content. They can make adjustments to improve the effectiveness of the content, while AI may not be able to make these types of changes on its own.
- Human touch: Ultimately, copywriting is a human activity that involves crafting messages that connect with other humans. While AI can create content that is technically accurate and grammatically correct, it may lack the warmth, empathy, and emotion that can only come from a human touch.
Overall, while AI can be a useful tool, it cannot replace the creativity, understanding, and adaptability that a skilled copywriter brings to the table. I would also be concerned and very careful about the legality of some of what AI writes.
